Turkey, in collaboration with scientists from the EU and USA, is planning an ambitious genome project focused on identifying inherited gene mutations in both rare and common diseases, including cancer. The project will concentrate on complex phenotypes with high heritability index such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric, endocrine, and rheumatologic diseases. There will be a focus on rare diseases, a field where Turkey has made significant contributions, and on cancer, particularly familial forms of oncological diseases. Advanced research activities such as gene therapy in malignant tumors and gene therapy in prevention of adverse effects in organ transplantation are also being conducted by leading Turkish universities.
